The Clash post made me start to think about many of the records I grew up with and I just LOVE to make lists. So this one is about the essential punk albums of my youth. Certainly, post-punk has much more mileage for me, but at the time (late 70′s) this stuff was where it was at. Just the kind of music your parents were sure to HATE! I even don’t think that stance is possible anymore with “alterna-moms” and all that. Some of this music is clearly “dated” now and some I could care less about but others still sound great today.
Here’s my list (in no particular order):
1) Sex Pistols-Never Mind The Bollocks
2) Alternative TV-The Mirror Has Cracked

3) The Clash-The Clash (UK version)
4) Generation X-Generation X (UK version)

5) Rudimentary Peni-Death Church
6) Black Flag-Damaged

7) Buzzcocks-Singles Going Steady
8)Television-Marquee Moon

9) The Avengers-The Avengers
10) Suicide-Suicide

11) The Adverts-Crossing The Red Sea
12) Circle Jerks-Group Sex

13) Discharge-Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing
14) The Adolescents-The Adolescents

15) The Jam-Setting Sons
16) Stiff Little Fingers-Inflammable Material

17) Husker Du-Zen Arcade/Metal Circus/Everything Falls Apart
18) Bad Brains-Rock For Light

19) Wire-Pink Flag
20) The Ruts-The Crack

21) Buzzcocks-Another Music In A Different Kitchen
22) X-Ray Spex-Germ-Free Adolescents

23) The Damned-Damned Damned Damned
24) Richard Hell and the Voidoids-Blank Generation

39) Naked Raygun-All Rise
40) Wire-Chairs Missing

41) Mission Of Burma-Signals, Calls and Marches/Vs.
42) Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers-L.A.M.F.

43) The Misfits-Walk Among Us
44) Crass-Penis Envy

45) The Replacements-Sorry Ma, I Forgot To Take Out The Trash
46) Sham 69-The Adventures Of The Hersham Boys

47) The Proletariat-Soma Holiday
48) Chelsea-singles comp

49) compilation-”Let Them Eat Jellybeans”
50) compilation-”Punk And Disorderly”

If I did 50 singles, then I could add a bunch of different bands like Crime, The Dils, The Mekons etc… Besides, some groups were perfect at “singles” over albums (such as, The Buzzcocks and The Jam). And then there were groups like Wire, Swell Maps and Siouxsie and the Banshees that went on to make much more interesting music after the 1975-1978 era was over.
p.s.-I never liked The Exploited
