The Explosive Generation

After Liz Phair’s debut album “Exile In Guyville” came out it was basically the last one worth listening to. So it was somewhat of a revelation when I finally heard the bootleg of her three previously recorded demo tapes (Girly Sound vol. 1-3). This average nerdy girl emerged from the musical womb fully formed.  I include one track here (from amongst 40).  Also in installment #40 is the first single from The Boys, a great track from King Khan & The Shrines as well as new songs from Los Campesinos! and Jonas Reinhardt.

I had a crazy fun weekend in Hermosa Beach and sampled food trucks with Jack on Echo Park Blvd.  There could be some changes coming soon, interesting changes and with that said, I do have a bit less time to do blogging, etc…and I am also focusing more on passions of mine (like taking photos).  Also, it drives Amanda crazy that I am always in front of this damn computer.  Still…I can always find the time to make a playlist to start the week out with.

This week, I start with the Glaxo Babies a totally terrific band from the late 70′s that is completely forgotten today.  The track I include here is jagged, funky and blissful.  For being 31 years old it still sounds remarkably fresh. Following that are new noisy pop songs from No Age and  The Bitters, as well as new tracks from Land Of Talk and Ellen Allien.  Enjoy

Nothing terribly challenging or eye-opening musically but then again, every week can’t be life-changing.

First up are Swedish popsters Sambassadeur doing a song from their new cd European.  Following that are The Mantles from their debut and a song I should have posted last year but I have a real backlog of material now and end up posting things months after I actually get them. So much for appearing “cutting edge”!  Next comes a song from the classic LA band The Dream Syndicate (from their seminal album Days Of  Wine And Roses) switching gears we move towars more electronic sounds with Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft from the early 80′s and the lead track off their album Für Immer. And finishing up today’s playlist is a song from the new upcoming Los Angeles “experimental hip-hop” (whatever you want to call it) artist Lorn.

This week, we start out with the Idle Race’s sixth single “Days Of The Broken Arrows“.  This was Jeff Lynne’s band prior to The Move and E.L.O. and this song has a bridge which clearly rips off a Beatles song but I can’t remember which one.  Still some great late-sixties Brit rock.

After that is a song from Rikk Agnew’s solo record “All By Myself”. His sound is all over the first Adolescents‘ album as well as the only good Christian Death record “Only Theatre Of Pain“…and again totally almost solely because of his rad sound.

Moving to more contemporary stuff (that sounds retro anyway) The new Beach Fossils album (on the phenomenal Sacred Bones record label) and then on to a song from LA’s superstar Flying Lotus from his new album called “Cosmogramma”.

Wrapping it all up is a very strange cautionary tale from 1971. Enjoy.

Outside of the 2010 re-releases of Exile On Main Street and Raw Power, one of the most welcome re-issues has been a compilation from Athens, GA’s legendary Method Actors called This Is Still It.  I haven’t been crazy about the recent Black Keys music but this lead off track from their latest Brothers sounds really good. Then there’s the case of Bruce Haack who composed children’s songs but in the late 60′s discovered psychedelic music which warped him in a wonderfully weird way. This song is from his Electric Lucifer lp (1969).  Slowing it down a bit is Caethua which is basically sombre folk with somewhat playful vocal arrangements. Indian Jewelry wraps things up on this edition with a song from their new one called Totaled.

I kinda feel these weekly forays into my personal jukebox are successful only if what I am putting up is largely unknown to most readers. I hope it serves as a weekly class in musical appreciation.

This week’s AP starts with Icelandic composer Ben Frost (who will rattle your speakers for sure!) I really have come to like his dense, dark textural noise mixed with compositional complexity.

It’s hard to follow that up with anything matching it but the closest I could come to regarding new releases is the latest Joker single “Tron”.

Next up we go really old school (1981) for The Mean Machine who as far as I have been able to tell are likely the first latino rap group (even rapping in Spanish). This is the 12″ single “Disco Dream” (I think the volume is mastered kinda low so TURN IT UP!)

Emeralds have a new cd out and the song “Candy Shoppe” is the first track on it.  Honestly, I could really listen to this Harmonia-inspired, neo-Kosmiche rock stuff all day long. Yummy.

Wrapping things up is a rocker from an early Blonde Redhead record and the song is called “Futurism vs. Passéism“.  Speaking of them, it seems as if they are due for a new record soon.

We start off with some pop to ease you in to this week’s playlist….I speak largely of the New Pornographers and The Briefs….and then we abruptly moving into good guitar grooves with Mugstar and Rangda (made up largely of Sun City Girls/Six Organs Of Admittance/Comets Of Fire people)  and ending up with ambient sonic dissolve with experimental black metal band Husere Grav.  All in all, a good selection for Aural Pleasures, volume 29.
